2019 Red River Theatres Oscar Portraits

2019 Red River Theatres Oscar Portraits

This year I decided to kick it up a notch when it came to my contribution of sponsoring the annual Red River Theatres Red Carpet Oscar Party. Not only would I provide the photography for guests wanting to have their portrait taken with a real oscar, but I’d also do a separate series of portraits that I dubbed “Academy Portraits”. This would be for a small number of people, but would allow me to stretch out a little more while being part of the event.

Read all about it after the cut:

COSPLAY SAVES THE WORLD!

COSPLAY SAVES THE WORLD!

I've read and collected comic books my entire life.  I pretty much learned to read when I was a tiny person by trying to figure out words in the balloons on comic pages.  There is a special place in my heart for characters like Green Lantern and Green Arrow and Airwave and Iron Man and many, many, many more.  So many.

When the Hippo phoned me up asking if I would photograph some local cosplayers for a cover story I practically jumped through the phone with an excited YES!  The paper scheduled four cosplayers to come by the studio one evening so we could make some images that would be featured on the cover as well as serve as the main story for that issue.

Star Island 2017

Star Island 2017

Back in September of 2017 I was gifted the chance to spend four days on Star Island on the Isle of Shoals with members of the NH Society of Photographic Artists. It was an amazing, awesome experience, and I wanted to share my story and some photographs that I made during that trip.

LOGAN

LOGAN

Six years ago my buddy Matt Smigiel got together and did a Wolverine-inspired photography shoot.  I'm a big comic-book fan and I had a ton of fun with Matt that day, and I knew someday I'd like to get around to doing another one.

Well, after a lot of procrastinating and seeing the "Noir" version of the latest Wolverine movie "Logan" I dusted off the claws and got Matt to come down to Nashua for another day of *snikt!"-ing claws and saying "bub" a lot.

Captain Plunger for Yankee Magazine

Captain Plunger for Yankee Magazine

Last year I got my first assignment from Yankee Magazine.  I got to spend a freezing February morning with Bill Jones' alter ego Captain Plunger as he prepared for his yearly plunge into the freezing waters of Hampton Beach for the Penguin Plunge put on by the New Hampshire Special Olympics.  Bill has been doing the plunge since it's inception, and over the last 17 years he continues to be the one individual who raises the most money each year.

Don't be Afraid to Ask: Jonatha Brooke

Don't be Afraid to Ask: Jonatha Brooke

I can't even explain to you how amazing it is that I made this photograph.  This is Jonatha Brooke.  She is one of my all time favorite musicians.  She, along with musician Jennifer Kimball, formed the band THE STORY in the 1990's.  I've been a fan of Jonatha's since then.  A little while back, I got to make a portrait of her.

How?  Simply because I asked.

Reverend Sam Seah

Reverend Sam Seah

I've known my buddy Dave for a long time.  He's become a very close friend, and I love hanging around with him and talking geek-stuff and recording podcasts and everything.  His father, who lives in Taiwan, has visited Dave twice in the years that I've known him, and on his second visit last year, Dave hired me to make some portraits of his father.

I was going to write about a fantastic evening and dinner at Dave's and then how his father, Ingram (though he also likes to be called Sam) played some music for us and how we talked for hours about his home and his life working in missionaries in both Taiwan and the US, but instead I just want to focus on the image above, and how much I love the look of intensity on his face while he played for us.

You can see a few more images here, but I wanted to just concentrate on this image.  I love it.  I feel it's a beautiful portrait, and I'm so glad I finally got to meet the father of a very good friend.
